Why probate is inimical to family wealth and how to avoid it
Family Money is an excellent and "user friendly" introduction for the non-specialist general reader into the intricacies of preparing and utilizing wills, trusts, life insurance, and other financial instruments for the purpose of endowing the people you love with the funds, properties, and possessions you wish to leave them as your legacy. Family Money covers the building and keeping of family money as a deliberate act while avoiding the hazards and uncertainties of contestable bequests. The reader will learn how to keep a will simple enough to do what is wanted, but detailed enough to satisfy a probate court; why probate is inimical to family wealth and how to avoid it; how to use living trusts to move as much as you can to family members; and when charitable trusts, special needs trusts, and other trusts can work in favor of your family. Of special value is the information on what to do if you find yourself named executor or trustee and how to instill notions of duty and humility in your heirs. If you want to pass on your wealth and possessions to those of your own choosing, then begin the process by carefully reading Family Money!

Fawn Island

Evokes charm and adventure
Fawn Island is a place where crows serve as alarm clocks, white-throated sparrows leave the tracks of their songs upon the even hush, and chickadees help a woodsman learn to whistle. The island is also a gateway to the sprawling Voyageurs National Park. An accomplished author, Douglas Wood takes the reader into the heart of the deep North Woods with his text (illustrated by his own artwork) that evokes the charm and adventure to be found in the quite of the pine-clad shores, as well as the neighborliness, and independence of those who live in this remarkable place. Fawn Island is enthusiastically recommended, entertaining, and occasionally inspiring reading for naturalists, armchair travelers, and anyone else who enjoys experiencing the what a wilderness retreat in the North Country has to offer.

Fifty Hikes in Central New York: Hikes and Backpacking Trips from the Western Adirondacks to the Finger Lakes

day hikers guide
I found this book to be a great way to learn about public hiking trails in CNY area. It has many details about access, estimated time, and conditions on the trails. One particularly useful feature is that it has a copy of a topographic map of the area with the trail clearly marked. Has a map showing the relative positions of each trail across the region with the table of contents. I like this book because it gives me ideas about new places to explore with lots of specific information.

The Finger Lakes Book: A Complete Guide (Great Destinations)

A travel guide for the Finger Lakes
Finally, I found it. I moved to the Finger Lakes area (Rochester, NY) in 1996 and every time I visited a local book store I looked for some kind of travel guide for the area and I could never find one that wasn't hiking or cycling related. When I saw this one, I had to buy it and I don't regret it. It came very handy for the summer so far. It includes some of the history of each of the finger lakes and its towns. It also includes places to see and visit, where to stay and where to eat. A very good section is the one that lists all the area festivals and the dates when they usually occur. The list can help you plan ahead, either to visit when the festivals are taking place or to avoid them. Another part of the book that is very helpful is the maps section. It has maps for the different finger lakes areas, w/ main roads, etc. And if you want to know about the area wineries, it has a whole chapter on wineries. I have found that this book can be used by a local as well as tourist to the Finger Lakes area, it is very complete.

The Finger Lakes Region: Its Origin and Nature

Finger Lakes Region Geology Explained
I found Dr. von Engeln's text to be incredibly informative on this enigmatic subject. Thousands of people visit the Finger Lakes region annually for it's beautiful lakes and abundant wineries, but few know how the region came to be. Dr. von Engeln has filled that gap nicely.

Fact-filled book --- plus internet links!
My daughter bought this book through a school bookfair and thoroughly loved reading it. I would give the book alone 5 stars for all the enjoyment and knowledge she's gotten from it. However, on every page, there is an internet link where you can get much more information about each subject in the book. What a bonus! I highly recommend this book for middle-grade elementary school children who like science.

The first lake dwellers

A story of the glue that makes societies strong
This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. It is a tale of adversity, recovery, cooperation and ultimate triumph. The main character is a boy named Arvi who lives in a village where there are sharp divisions between the farmer and hunter groups. As soon as the grain is collected and stored, the village is attacked and destroyed by a tribe of bandits, who steal all the grain, leaving the villagers scattered and without food for the winter. Under orders from the wise man of the village, Arvi takes a small amount of grain and hides it away so that it can serve as the seed for future crops.
The divisions continue after the destruction of the village, but a small band builds a tiny dwelling on a lake, where the water serves as a protective barrier. Others from their former village see how cooperation leads to greater yields and begin joining the settlement on the lake, which continues to grow as they all work together. In the end, the two village factions unite to utterly defeat their enemies.
Although this is an adventure story set in a primitive society, it is also an excellent social commentary on how divisions in society lead to weakness and how enlightened leadership and cooperation can create more for all. My children will read it and then afterward, we will discuss the timeless messages about the structure of societies.
